Real life work experience |

Students from Barnsley College are gaining real life work experience in several of the new shops and services launched by the College in 2011.
Funky Dory, a gift gallery shop and Crumbs, a bistro café have been open to the public for three months. Both shops are located in the Old Mill Lane building and are staffed predominately by students from the Learning for Living and Work department, who working alongside their tutors, research, stock and dress the shop as well as serve customers.
The Learning for Living and Work Department aims to prepare students with learning difficulties, additional needs and disabilities for work and independent living.
These commercial ventures and those in Zest Restaurant and Images Training and Treatment Salon, which are also open to the public, allow students to develop transferrable skills in customer service, monetary and presentation skills as well as

Bedtime Reading Week in Barnsley |
|
|
Libraries and Children’s Centres across the borough will be celebrating Barnsley’s own “Bedtime Reading Week” from Monday, 30 January to Friday, 4 February.
After the success of last years Bedtime Reading Week this has now become an annual event.
During the week there will be special bedtime-themed story time events for families with young children. Bookstart Bear will be visiting Barnsley for the week, and is looking forward to joining in the fun.
Penistone FM Community Radio (95.7 FM) will be airing bedtime stories including favourites by Julia Donaldson the Children’s Laureate, Nick Sharratt and Jill Murphy, all read by people from the local community. Tune in or listen online from about 6.45pm each evening during Bedtime Reading Week.

Rent Increases For Barnsley |

Council house tenants in Barnsley will see an increase in their rent from April following a decision by Cabinet members today (Wednesday 18 January) and the level of the increase is a direct result of the Government’s rent restructuring policy.
The decision was part of recommendations made in the Housing Revenue Account Draft Budget 2012/13 report which explains how the council has to follow the Government’s policy which will determine the rent levels for future years. The average rent increase for Barnsley Council tenants in 2012/13 will be £5.77.
The report also set out proposals on how some of the housing budget will be allocated to provide support for tenants who may be struggling to manage their household finances in the current difficult economic climate.

Helping bereaved families |

From Thursday 26 January, Doncaster Council will be offering a new service for residents registering a death, which will simplify the process of notifying relevant council and government departments.
The Tell Us Once service, being delivered in partnership with the Department for Work and Pensions, will enable a registrar to work through a much easier notification process with recently bereaved residents at the same time as registering a death.
Residents will be told what information they need to bring with them to access this service when they book their appointment with the Registrar and the whole process, including registration of the death, will take around 40 minutes.
