To mark the two-year countdown to the start of the London Olympic Games, a new display at Barnsley Town Hall celebrates the sporting achievements of one of the borough’s best loved sporting heroes, Dorothy Hyman. 

From the village of Cudworth, Dorothy Hyman is one of the 20th century’s most successful athletes. 

The team behind the Experience Barnsley project, which will see a museum and archives centre open in the Town Hall in 2012, have produced the display as part of their ongoing work in gathering stories, objects and artefacts for display in the new museum.

Inspirational writing and photography workshops Print E-mail

Digital photography and writing workshops will be held in two of Barnsley’s most stunning buildings during September.

A writing workshop will take place at Barnsley Town Hall on Friday, 10 September, from 9.30am to 3pm. The town hall has witnessed 77 years of Barnsley history,  from the 1930’s Depression and World War II to the promotion of Barnsley FC to the Premiership, and from the ‘Swinging Sixties’ to the Miners’ Strike, and much more. 

Those taking part will work with writer Stephen Wade to tell their stories linked to the events witnessed by this iconic building as it reaches the end of one era and the beginning of a new one - in a few months, Barnsley Town Hall will close temporarily for much-needed repairs and modernisation works. Two in court charged with assault in Hartlepool Print E-mail

A 50 -year- old man from Sheffield injured during an incident in Hartlepool at the weekend is in a critical but stable condition at James Cook University Hospital.

A 23 -year- old man from Hartlepool, Paul Simon Bennett,  has now been charged with two counts of assault in relation to the incident and 27-year-old Dean Anthony Carroll, also from Hartlepool has been charged with one count of assault.Both men were due to appear at Teesside Magistrates’ Court on the morning of 30th August 2010.

Collision on Bolsover Road, Barnsley Print E-mail

Police are appealing for witnesses to a serious collision which last left a 2-year-old with serious injuries.

Just after 6.35pm yesterday (Thursday, 2 September) a yellow Ford Transit ice-cream van was reported to have been parked on Bolsover Road, facing Barnsley Road, near to the junction of Ellerton Road, Sheffield. As the vehicle has started to drive away it has collided with a two-year-old pedestrian.

Council watchdog investigates the future of the NHS in Barnsley Print E-mail

Scrutiny Commission councillors have met for the first of a series of meetings examining the NHS White Paper and how this will affect Barnsley’s communities.

The White Paper, called Equity and excellence: liberating the NHS, sets out the Government's long-term vision for the future of the NHS.

There are a number of proposals within the paper, which will revolutionise how health services are planned and delivered. One of the proposals is that GP practices should be given the money buy health services for local people.

There are concerns that this will take GPs away from seeing patients and that this system may cost more money.

Become a theory test pro Print E-mail

Barnsley residents who are learning to drive can now practice for the driving theory test through their local library.

Barnsley Library has just added Theory Test Pro to its growing list of internet services available for free to its borrowers. This service provides a highly realistic online simulation of the UK's driving theory test. It contains the entire official test question bank, hazard perception video clips and an online version of the Highway Code.

Theory Test Pro's material is licensed from the Driving Standards Agency (DSA), so learner drivers can be assured that the practice questions they're given are from the people who set the official tests.

Murder enquiry in Sheffield Print E-mail

Detectives have launched a murder enquiry after a 29-year-old Sheffield man died in hospital at 10.55am today (1/9/10).

Police were called after the victim, who had suffered stab wounds, was found on Swanbourne Road, near Sheffield Lane Top, at around 4am today.

He was taken by ambulance to the city’s Northern General Hospital, where he died later this morning.

High Green appeal as two remain in hospital Print E-mail

Police are re-appealing for witnesses ten days after a serious collision in High Green, Sheffield, which left two people seriously injured in hospital.

A silver Ford Focus was reported to have emerged out of Wortley Road on to Westwood New Road in front of a blue Peugeot 307, which had been travelling towards Sheffield from Tankersley.

The Peugeot is believed to have then crossed the carriageway and collided with a black Renault Scenic, which was travelling in the opposite direction.  The Peugeot has come to rest on a grass verge on the Howbrook side of the carriageway.

Travellers who have been affected by the recent collapse of two British tour companies Goldtrail and Kiss Flights (one of the trading names of Flight Options Ltd.) are offered the following advice:

* where payment has been made using a credit card, you should contact the credit card supplier as you may have an 'equal liability' claim against them under section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 which holds them jointly liable for breaches of contract where the total contract price is between £100 - £30,000, no matter how much was paid using the card
