The Ecclesfield Safer Neighbourhood Team joined forces with its partners for a Week of Action in Chapeltown.

The initiative took place between Monday January 18 and Sunday January 24, during which six people were arrested – three are currently still on bail and three have been charged with assault, criminal damage and public order.

Crime in this area during October to December 2009 fell by 17 per cent, compared to the same period in 2008.

Inspector Steve Mouzer, of the Ecclesfield Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “Following similarly successful weeks of action in High Green, Fox Hill and Grenoside, our aim was to provide an increased police presence in the area, whilst consulting with local residents to find out what policing issues are important to them.

“We achieved this aim by working with our partners. We will continue to consult with local residents throughout the whole safer neighbourhood area.”

During this period the South Yorkshire Police display bus visited various locations, including Asda, Chapeltown Working Men’s Club and Costcutter.

The bus also stopped at Ecclesfield School where pupils spoke to police officers and PCSOs. Students were also shown how knife arches work and received crime prevention information and advice about what our partner agencies can offer.

Alcohol test purchase operations were carried at 12 premises, three of which failed and received £80 fixed penalty notices.

Licensing checks were also carried out at various pubs in Chapeltown, but no issues were identified.

A drugs search dog was also utilised to ensure that licensed premises were drug free.

Foot patrols were increased on Friday and Saturday evenings to reassure people and the Road Crime Unit helped make local roads safer. The team issued 37 fixed penalty notices and seven vehicles were seized for various offences, including driving without a licence or insurance and carless driving.

The mounted section of South Yorkshire Police were also used to help tackle nuisance motoring in the area.

PCSOs carried out a survey of local residents to find out what issues are important to them. Questionnaires were completed by 82 people – the answers to which will help shape future policing priorities.

Ecclesfield Safer Neighbourhood Team’s partners Activity Sheffield and Sheffield Futures helped provide activities such as indoor climbing, street dance, cheerleading and sports for youngsters.

Sheffield City Council’s Environmental Health department also organised litter patrols and firefighters from South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue carried out free home fire safety checks.
