Three new council housing schemes in Rotherham have been given the green light after Housing Minister and Wentworth MP John Healey announced more money for affordable homes.
In January Mr Healey announced an extra £21m to build 345 new homes in Yorkshire and the Humber – and more than £2m has been earmarked for Rotherham.
Twenty-nine homes will be built on Albert Street in West Melton, eight more will be built on Newlands Avenue in Maltby and Stone Park Close in Maltby will get a further four new houses.
News of the three schemes, which total £2.3m, follows an announcement in November of plans to build 35 new affordable council properties on Wood Street and School Street in Dalton.
For the first time Mr Healey has required that all councils receiving Government funding for affordable housing should offer apprenticeship and local job recruitment schemes.
“All the successful local authorities in Yorkshire and the Humber have proved ready and willing to build new homes, so I’m ready to back them,” said Mr Healey. “More affordable homes for rent are needed in these areas and in every part of the county. “This year’s Government spending for affordable housing will be the largest ever, and we must get the most for every taxpayer’s pound, so I’m requiring all councils getting this Government money to offer new jobs and apprenticeships to local people.”
Councillor Jahangir Akhtar, Rotherham Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Neighbourhoods, welcomed the news. “This is a reflection of how successful our first bid was for new housing in Dalton, and it shows that the Government has continued confidence in Rotherham’s ability to deliver these much needed council homes,” he said.
“We’re in the business of building neighbourhoods, sustainable communities, and these will be houses built for the 21st century, not just rows and rows of terraced council houses. “There are over 19,000 people on the housing register in Rotherham, and clearly there is a need for more social housing in the borough.
Certainly the feedback that we get from our residents is that they prefer council houses to the private sector.”
