Mayor of Barnsley, Councillor Margaret Sheard and Consort Mr Tom Sheard recently welcomed visitors from the Chernobyl Lifeline charity to the town hall on Friday, 16 July at 12 noon.

The 12 children and four adults had been invited to have lunch with the Mayor while on a recuperative holiday in the borough.

The children’s charity organises these breaks for the children of Belarus as their homeland was contaminated by the Chernobyl disaster. It is advisable for the children to be away from Chernobyl at least two to three weeks a year for a recuperative holiday.

The charity aims to use this opportunity to give the children a chance to breathe fresh air and eat uncontaminated food as well as to experience life in Britain and improve their knowledge of English.

For these children the break is much more than a holiday, it will add years to their life expectancy.
