A company appeared in Barnsley magistrates court on Thursday, 15 July, charged with removing the dates from 37,000 cans of Fosters lager and applying a new date to the cans 16 months after it the original best before date.
The charge was brought by Barnsley Council’s Regulatory Services department and arose as part of a joint investigation between Barnsley Trading Standards Officers and HMRC Customs Officers.
Becsco Limited and its Managing Director Scott Padgett were charged with two offences under the Food Labelling law.
A guilty plea was entered and Barnsley Magistrates awarded fines and costs of £11,713. In addition the 37,000 cans of lager which would have had a trade value of around £25,000 were forfeited and have since been crushed by Customs.
Cllr Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson, Customer and Neighbourhood Services, said: “It is
extremely important that we are not mislead about the food and drink we consume. Food fraud like this will never be tolerated in Barnsley.”
Anyone wishing to pass on information about food fraud should contact Regulatory Services on 01226 772468.
