Motorists are being warned that part of a busy route through Rotherham is to be closed for three months from next week.

A stretch of Doncaster Road - from its junction with Middle Lane to its junction with St. Ann's Road - will be closed from next Monday 26 July to allow for highway works that will improve the safety of pedestrians around the Clifton Park area.

A temporary traffic diversion will be in place when the section of Doncaster Road closes from Monday until Sunday October 24. The works - at three locations on the road -  are starting at the beginning of the school holidays in an effort to minimise disruption.

However visitors to Rotherham's popular Clifton Park will find that access to the car park off Doncaster Road will be maintained throughout the works.

In addition the diversion will be lifted before, during and after the annual Rotherham Show, which is staged in Clifton Park on Saturday and Sunday, September 11 and 12.

The traffic diversions will be in place from Saturday, July 24, until Saturday, September 4, but then all diversions will be lifted in time for preparations for the Rotherham Show in Clifton Park. The diversions will be put back in place on Wednesday, September 15, until Thursday, September 30.

In addition the diversions will be in place on five Sundays - from September 19 until October 24.

The whole scheme, being carried out by Rotherham Streetpride, is geared to improving access for pedestrians into Clifton Park from the Eastwood area, as well as helping pedestrians, specially Clifton Comprehensive School pupils, to walk from Eastwood to Clifton safely.

The works will see the existing zebra crossing on Doncaster Road to Clifton Park improved; footpaths  improved and the relocation of the two existing bus stops.

In addition a new zebra crossing will be installed across Doncaster Road between Cottenham Road and Middle Lane and a new footpath built adjacent to the park wall between Middle Lane and Clifton Park.

The third and final area of work is the resurfacing of Doncaster Road itself between St. Ann's Road and  Wharncliffe Street.

Cllr Richard Russell, Cabinet Member for Streetpride, said the works were vital to improve road safety around Clifton Park.

He added: "The park is a very popular venue and people travel there by all sorts of means so we have to try and ensure the safety of all road users, whether they are in a car, on the bus or are walking.

"The proximity of the secondary school also means the area sees a lot of young walkers who also need to be safe. We hope that motorists will be patient during the roadworks and make use of the suggested temporary diversions."
