An event to celebrate the refurbishment of Mapplewell war memorial takes place tomorrow, Wednesday, 28 July at 10am.
Deputy Mayor of Barnsley, Cllr John Parkinson, will be joined by Darton East council members and members of the Barnsley British Legion.
The war memorial refurbishment was a project supported by the Darton East members.
The site had become over grown with old conifers and laurels and was in such a poor state that the memorial could not be seen.
In October it was decided to remove all the old planting and start afresh. Work started in April this year - the fence and
gates were repainted, a new timber fence erected between the memorial and the neighbouring property and a firm surface applied to the gravelled area around the memorial.
A planting scheme was then designed to provide colour and interest all year round. The work was carried out by Barnsley Council’s Neighbourhood Services at a cost of £2,500, with a £700 grant coming from the Darton East Members for the new plants. The War Memorial now takes pride of place on Blacker Road for all to enjoy and pay their respects.
Deputy Mayor of Barnsley, Cllr John Parkinson, said: "I am proud to have been involved in this refurbishment project. It is important that we never forget those who fought and indeed are still fighting for our freedom. The whole community is pleased that the grounds have been sympathetically landscaped."
