Dog owners are being asked to support Poop Scoop Week (26 July to 1 August).
Poop Scoop Week is a Dogs Trust initiative that takes place every year in conjunction with councils across the UK and Ireland.
This year Barnsley Council Regulatory Services officers are urging dog owners to pick up after their dog and help clean up public spaces. While the majority of dog owners are responsible and pick up after their dog, a careless few are still giving dogs a bad name.
Councillor Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson, Customer and Neighbourhood Services, is backing the Dogs Trust’s message: ‘Grab it, Bag it, Bin it’.
He said: “Cleaning up after your dog is simple and the only way of ensuring a summer free from the nuisance of pooch poop.”
Grab It, Bag It and Bin It is a simple action plan everyone can follow…
GRAB IT - Always keep a supply of plastic bags near your dog's lead - supermarket carrier bags make great poop scoops - so you don't forget to take a
poop scoop with you on every walk. Simply insert your hand in the plastic bag and pick up your dogs waste. It's easy and not as bad as you think.
BAG IT - Carefully turn the plastic bag inside out and your dogs mess will then be 'bagged'.
BIN IT - Dispose of your bag in a 'Poop' bin. Contrary to popular belief, dog waste can also be put into a public litter bin if a specific dog waste bin is not provided.
In addition to their regular patrols of the borough, council officers will be in Locke Park on Thursday, 29 and Friday, 30 June between 10am and 4pm, giving out free poop bags and encouraging responsible dog ownership. Barnsley Council says “scoop that poop!”
