Fatal Stab Wound Victim Named. Print E-mail

wound-vict-sheff01Police have named the man who recently died in hospital, hours after being found with stab wounds on Swanbourne Road, near Sheffield Lane Top.

He is Damian John Taff, aged 29, from Sheffield. Police were called after Damian was found injured on Swanbourne Road at around 4am on the morning, Wednesday, 1 September.

He was taken by ambulance to the city’s Northern General Hospital, where he later died.

A post mortem carried out confirmed that Damian had died as a result of stab wounds.

Detectives, who have launched a murder enquiry, are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to

Fly tipper prosecuted Print E-mail

A Rotherham man has been given a suspended prison sentence for fly tipping as Rotherham Borough Council continues its fight against enviro-crime.

Trevor John Jones of Ellesmere Terrace, Clifton, received a four month prison sentence suspended for 12 months and a 160 hour Unpaid Work Order after pleading guilty to four charges of dumping waste at various locations around the Rotherham area.

Prosecutors for Rotherham Borough Council told Rotherham Magistrates on Wednesday (August 18) that the four offences were all carried out between March and December last year.

Ulley Country Park Reopened Print E-mail

The Mayor of Rotherham, Councillor Rose NcNeely, officially re-opened one of the borough's favourite parks last weekend At 1.30 pm on Sunday, August 29.

She will cut a ribbon to signal that Ulley Country Park is open to visitors again - three years after the floods forced it closure.

Following the successful completion of engineering works to restore the dam, water levels have now reached a safe height in the reservoir allowing public access once again to this popular spot once again.

Pakistan Flood Appeal Print E-mail

Rotherham Borough Council has launched a local appeal to help the catastrophic flood disaster in Pakistan.

The authority will use its network of service centres and civic buildings to allow the public across the Borough to make financial donations geared to supporting the emergency relief work for what is threatening to become one of the biggest disasters in the world.

It has been estimated that 20 million people have been left homeless and up to 3.5 million children are said to be at risk from waterborne-diseases, such as cholera and dysentery, in a flooded area the size of England.

Literary gem uncovered Print E-mail

A letter signed by Jungle Book author Rudyard Kipling, has been discovered amongst the collections of Barnsley Archives and Local Studies.

The typed letter dates back to 1912, five years after Kipling had won the Nobel Prize for Literature, and only three years before he lost his beloved only son John at the Battle of Loos. It was sent to the then Barnsley Librarian Frank J. Taylor who was writing a book about Yorkshire dialect, to which the celebrated author was making a contribution.

It was only discovered when archive staff came to catalogue the surviving Frank Taylor papers in detail. The letter is

Roll up, roll up at Mowbray Gardens Library Print E-mail

Mowbray Gardens Library will be “clowning around” and letting visitors try out exciting new activities, including circus skills.

The popular Herringthorpe Valley Road library, which recently celebrated its first birthday, is providing a day of activities on Tuesday 7 September as a way to try something new and an opportunity to come and see what the library has to offer.

From 9am - 2pm, there will be something special to try your hand at.

For those who have dreamed of learning how to juggle, spin a plate or have a go on a unicycle, then Swamp Circus will be on hand to make those dreams come true, by teaching basic circus skills.

Wombwell open spaces improved Print E-mail

Over £100,000 will be spent on improving public open spaces in Wombwell, following a decision made by Barnsley Council’s Cabinet members today (Wednesday 1 September).

Members agreed that the following projects would be included in the council’s Capital Programme:

A multi-use games area at Everill Gate recreation ground,
an improved parking area at Wombwell cricket ground,
improved play equipment at Summer Lane recreation ground,
installation of lighting at Aldham House recreation ground.

One of Clifton Park Museum’s most well know pieces, “The Sentry”, is to go on loan to Museums Sheffield and Norwich Castle Museum to feature as part of a new exciting exhibition.

The Sentry, a World War 1 bronze maquette by local sculptor Charles Sargent Jagger, will feature in the exhibition "Restless Times; Art in Britain 1914-45".

The collection will use British art to explore the turbulent but creative years during wartime Britain by investigating the spirit of change, uncertainty and cultural exchanges during this period.
