Viewpoint: Is it time to get rid of traffic lights?

We rely on traffic lights to tell us when to go. And when to stop. We should replace that with common sense, argues traffic campaigner Martin Cassini. It was a day in Cambridge in 2000 at a road junction where normally I would wait for three signal changes to get through. This time it was deserted and as I breezed through without incident or delay I saw that the traffic lights were out of action. From then on I started thinking: "Are we better off left to our own devices and is this huge system of traffic control blocking our progress and making us 'see red' in more ways than one?" First, the statistics. The latest annual figures show there were 24,500 deaths or serious injuries on the roads in a year in the UK.

From Thursday 26 January, Doncaster Council will be offering a new service for residents registering a death, which will simplify the process of notifying relevant council and government departments.

The Tell Us Once service, being delivered in partnership with the Department for Work and Pensions, will enable a registrar to work through a much easier notification process with recently bereaved residents at the same time as registering a death.

Residents will be told what information they need to bring with them to access this service when they book their appointment with the Registrar and the whole process, including registration of the death, will take around 40 minutes.

Councillor Mark Thompson, Cabinet Member for Corporate Services says: "When a death happens in a family, we understand that the last thing anybody wants to be doing is dealing with administration.

"Tell Us Once turns what has been a traditionally cumbersome process into a fast and efficient service, removing red tape and giving time back to families when they need it most."

If a resident is unable to use the service at the time of registering the death (for example, if they are unable to bring the required documents and information with them), then they can telephone Department of Work and Pensions Tell Us Once helpline on 0800 085 7308.
