seaon-TIn September 2008, 18-year-old Dale Robertson was fatally stabbed during a disturbance in the street on Rokeby Drive, Parson Cross, Sheffield, after a party. The disagreement had begun following a dispute over a stolen video game, and escalated, with tragic consequences.

Seaon Thompson, pictured, 16-years-old at the time of Dale’s death, was found guilty in April 2009 of the murder of Dale Robertson. He appealed against his conviction and the appeal was upheld. The Court of Appeal quashed his original conviction but ordered a retrial at Sheffield Crown Court.

Thompson appeared at Sheffield Crown Court on 6 July 2010 and pleaded guilty to the murder of Dale Robertson before the start of the retrial. He was sentenced on 22 July 2010 to life imprisonment with a minimum of nine years, seven months (minus time spent on remand) before he can be considered for parole.

Fun at St Helens Community Gala Print E-mail

This Saturday (31 July 2010) there will be fun for all the family at the St Helens Community Gala between 11am to 2pm.

The gala will take place on Laithes Lane playing fields (Pit field) in Athersley. Look out for free face-painting, donkey rides, fire engine, a bouncy castle and sport day themed races with prizes. Refreshments will also be available.

The event organised by the council’s North East Area Partnership will provide visitors with an opportunity to meet representatives from local community groups, Youth Service, Learning Net, Workers Education Association and Safer Neighbourhoods Team.

Mapplewell war memorial refurbished Print E-mail

An event to celebrate the refurbishment of Mapplewell war memorial takes place tomorrow, Wednesday, 28 July at 10am.

Deputy Mayor of Barnsley, Cllr John Parkinson, will be joined by Darton East council members and members of the Barnsley British Legion.

The war memorial refurbishment was a project supported by the Darton East members.

The site had become over grown with old conifers and laurels and was in such a poor state that the memorial could not be seen.

Mayor welcomes Chernobyl children Print E-mail

Mayor of Barnsley, Councillor Margaret Sheard and Consort Mr Tom Sheard recently welcomed visitors from the Chernobyl Lifeline charity to the town hall on Friday, 16 July at 12 noon.

The 12 children and four adults had been invited to have lunch with the Mayor while on a recuperative holiday in the borough.

.A town that is harnessing ‘enterprise’ to transform the aspirations of children and young people has beat off stiff competition from across Yorkshire & The Humber to be crowned as ‘The Most Enterprising Place’ in Yorkshire 2010.

Enterprising school children and young entrepreneurs from the town wowed a panel of tough, private sector judges last week to help secure Rotherham's crown as 'The Most Enterprising Place in Yorkshire.'

Primary and secondary school pupils told the panel how enterprise education was making a difference to their aspirations, and then Young Entrepreneur Luci Bennett described how she successfully developed her own fashion label, Roc and Doll.

A company appeared in Barnsley magistrates court on Thursday, 15 July, charged with removing the dates from 37,000 cans of Fosters lager and applying a new date to the cans 16 months after it the original best before date. 

The charge was brought by Barnsley Council’s Regulatory Services department and arose as part of a joint investigation between Barnsley Trading Standards Officers and HMRC Customs Officers. 

Becsco Limited and its Managing Director Scott Padgett were charged with two offences under the Food Labelling law. 

A guilty plea was entered and Barnsley Magistrates awarded fines and costs of £11,713.  In addition the 37,000 cans of lager which would have had a trade value of around £25,000 were forfeited and have since been crushed by Customs.

Families with children of all ages are invited to Rotherham’s Clifton Park for a free weekend of entertainment and play opportunities as “Play in the Park” returns for another year of fun.

Taking place on Saturday, July 31 and Sunday, August 1, between 10am and 4pm on both days, the weekend will feature everything from Bungee trampolines and donkey rides to an exciting climbing wall.

School meals rise and shine! Print E-mail

School meal numbers have risen again in Rotherham but parents are being reminded that there will also be a small rise in the cost of meals from September.

The average number of meals served each day in Rotherham schools in 2009/10 rose by 408 to 15,714 - above the target the school meal service had set for this year.

The price change will mean meal prices rise by just 5p when the new school term starts - the first rise for two years.
