The government needs to tackle the UK's "failing food system" by linking its policies on health, environment and education, a committee of MPs has said. The Environmental Audit Committee said a focus on sustainable intensification - or increasing food yields - risked "damaging the environment and society". It called for gardening and cooking to be part of school curriculums, and for stricter junk food advertising limits. Defra said it was trying to boost food production at less environmental cost. "We spend £400m a year on agriculture and food research, we're close to publishing the ambitious Green Food Project to make the whole food chain as sustainable as possible," a spokeswoman said.

Why we should talk more about death E-mail
News - News in brief...

In this week's Scrubbing Up opinion column, Prof Mayur Lakhani chair of the Dying Matters Coalition, urges doctors to be more open and frank about preparing patients and their families for the end of life. Imagine a situation where most people with a common condition are undiagnosed and where opportunities are repeatedly missed to identify the problem and to offer good care. What is this condition? It's dying. Each year, an estimated 92,000 people in England are believed to need end of life care but not receive it. As a practising GP I have seen distressed relatives after a patient has died in hospital. Often they have not had a chance to see their relative before they died and were unaware of the seriousness of the condition, despite repeated admissions with deteriorating conditions.

Father's organ donor lesson call E-mail
News - News in brief...

A father whose son died from leukaemia has called for a new law requiring school and college students to be taught about donating blood, organs and stem cells. Keith Sudbury's son Adrian, a 27-year-old journalist from Sheffield, died in August 2008. Mr Sudbury spent the final few months of his life campaigning to raise awareness of bone marrow donation. The campaign has been backed by blood cancer charity Anthony Nolan. Mr Sudbury said: "We urgently need more people willing to donate blood and stem cells. "By taking this message to students aged 16 years and over we can grow the first generation of potential lifesavers who really understand what it means to donate blood, organs and stem cells."

Father wants 'donation' lessons E-mail
News - News in brief...

A father who lost his son to leukaemia is calling for secondary schools and colleges to include one lesson on how to donate stem cells, blood and organs. Keith Sudbury wants to raise awareness by making donation part of the curriculum for students aged 16 and over. His son Adrian received a stem cell transplant which gave him an extra year of life, but died aged 27. Blood cancer charity Anthony Nolan is supporting the idea of 'Adrian's Law'. Adrian spent the last two years of his life campaigning for better education about stem cell donation.

Wild spring weather baffles bugs E-mail
News - News in brief...

The wettest April in more than a century has caused problems for UK butterflies, bees and other bugs. Conservation charities, Butterfly Conservation and Buglife, said the weather was likely to limit some species' opportunities to forage. If the unfavourable conditions continue, they could lead to population crashes. Experts are particularly concerned about honeybees, which will not forage in the cold and could run out of food. But some of the country's invertebrate population, such as snails and slugs, are likely to benefit from the deluge.

Alan Johnson has mayor ambition E-mail
News - News in brief...

Alan Johnson has said he considered running for London mayor and has hinted that he could seek the job in 2016. The former home secretary was widely touted as Labour's candidate two years ago, before Ken Livingstone was selected. Dieting 'safe for pregnant women' E-mail
News - News in brief...

Dieting in pregnancy is safe for women and does not carry risks for the baby, a review of research has suggested. The British Medical Journal analysis looked at the findings from 44 previous studies involving more than 7,000 women. The London-based team said following a healthy diet - and not eating for two - prevents excess weight gain and cuts the risk of complications. But current guidelines do not advocate dieting or weight monitoring. The advice from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), published in 2010, says: "Dieting during pregnancy is not recommended as it may harm the health of the unborn child." However women are advised to aim to reach a healthy weight before conceiving.
